Hajj and Trade Routes Archaeological Survey, NEOM, KSA

Documentation of heritage sites along two historic Hajj and trade routes through NEOM, combining satellite imagery, drone photography, and field survey to assess tourism and research potential.

A weathered stone block carved with a Kufic-style Arabic inscription rests in a desert clearing, documented during the Hajj and Trade Routes archaeological survey in NEOM, Saudi Arabia.

Client/partner: NEOM

The project aimed at documenting heritage sites along two historic Hajj and Trade routes to assess their tourism and research potential. Extensive pre-fieldwork research defined the routes through NEOM and was followed by a detailed field survey using technologies like satellite imagery and drone photography.

The survey included a 200 m buffer around the routes, focusing on features such as water sources, stations, and camp areas. Findings were documented comprehensively, integrated into NEOM’s database. The final report analyzed the evolution of these routes and offered recommendations for public engagement.
