Aksum World Heritage Site and Museum, Ethiopia

The project “Improvement of Aksum Archaeological Site and Related Services” was a feasibility study sponsored by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) of Addis Ababa. The overarching goal was to strengthen the sustainable enhancement of Ethiopia’s cultural heritage, with a specific focus on Aksum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most significant archaeological and cultural landscapes in Sub-Saharan Africa.

As project leader, we guided the development of a comprehensive feasibility study that includes a conceptual plan for a new museum, an assessment of monument preservation and proposed infrastructural interventions, and a community engagement and sustainability strategy to promote Axum’s vernacular heritage.

This project represents a critical step toward the future valorization of Axum, integrating heritage conservation with local development, and reaffirming its place as a living cultural landscape of global significance.
